Residential Interior Design: Living Room Great Neck, Long Island, NY

I have had the pleasure of designing the interiors of many splendid homes in Great Neck but this was one of my favorite projects.  The homeowner, Ronnie, was a successful single woman in her 60’s.  Upon our initial consultation she expressed an aversion to the color black.  She liked the colors coral and turquoise. We decided to give it a transitional look and use accents of coral and turquoise.  The room was long and narrow and I suggested building the sofa into a nook which created interest and personality to the room.  The shape of the sofa in a “U” which complements the space and invites interaction and conversation among guests.  I also had grass cloth adhered to the back of the wall unit to provide texture which gave the nook a warm, cozy feel while also helping to pleasantly balance the acoustics of the room.

Opposite the seating nook, I designed a custom wall unit which tastefully housed the entertainment center.  We stayed with simple lines as we wanted to create a classic transitional look.  As far as Ronnie’s aversion to black, we did purchase a clock for the kitchen with black trim.  Ronnie says it was brown and I laughed and said, “It’s ok, you just stepped a little bit out of your comfort level.”  Ronnie was thrilled with the design of her new living room and other rooms.  Her home eventually caught the attention of House Magazine and was featured in the July/August 2009 issue.

Great Neck, Long Island

Great Neck consists of nine villages located on a peninsula on the north shore of Long Island, in Nassau County, New York.  The area was originally home of the Mattinecock Native Americans with Europeans settling in 1664.  In the late 19th century the New York Railroad turned Great Neck from a farm community into a thriving, suburban commuter town.  F. Scott Fitzgerald lived in Great Neck in the 1920s, at six Gateway Drive in Great Neck Estates and the area became the inspiration for his novel The Great Gatsby.  Wealthy New Yorker’s and Hollywood movie stars built lavish homes in Great Neck and the area became synonymous with the decadence of the roaring 20’s.  The area is known for its magnificent estates and gorgeous scenery and considered one of the most desirable areas to live within commuting distance to New York City.

In the 2009 census, the median income for Great Neck was estimated at $98,720 and the estimated the median house or condo real estate value in was $901,906.

Residential Interior Design: Bedroom Huntington, Long Island, NY

The interior design of this bedroom has a classic, romantic, timeless look.  The starting point for this project was this great bold damask pattern.  The damask pattern is done in a metallic and really shines in the room. This simple pillow created the whole design scheme for this bedroom.  Because of the shiny metallic color in the pillow, I decided that it would be a great idea to paint all the trims in the room a metallic gold, including the crown, base and window casings.

This bedroom before my interior design brought you back to the 1970’s with its white mica minimalist furniture.  The homeowner told me she wanted a traditional look.  I had designed other rooms for her so I knew and understood her taste. While she wanted a traditional look she also expressed a desire for an “updated” traditional look with an edge.

The first order of business was to address the space.  The room was long and narrow and missed the mark as it had no architectural interest. I analyzed the bedroom’s need for storage and space. The closet as it existed in the bedroom did not suit the needs for the client.

Creating the built-in window banquet solved both problems.  I had my cabinet maker build a custom unit according to my specifications, measurements, designs and color selections. In doing so we created more storage for the client as well as an amazing design focal point for the room.  The tunnel-effect of the long, stark room became an altogether comfortable place to read a book or enjoy the scenic view out the window.  We used an open mesh grid pattern for the balloon window treatments which allowed light to flow into the bedroom and trimmed it with a decorative fringe.

From there, the design of the bedroom evolved.  We continued with the fabrics and fringe on the night table and added an elegant crystal chandelier beside the bed.  I found a unique walnut and rattan headboard for the bed in one of my designer showrooms.  When the project was complete we had created a bedroom that was beautiful, comfortable and functional.

It has been a pleasure working with this family.  She has referred me to several of her friends and family members. It has been a wonderful experience working together. Thank you, again, Karen.  I am glad you are happy with the bedroom design.

This is the living room décor before I set to work.  I had been working on interior designs for other room in this Dix Hills home for about a year and every time I walked by living room I couldn’t help but think there had to be a better way to use the color red.  The client understood that bright apple red color was overwhelming the room but they loved the color.

Finally they asked me to come up with an interior design for this room that was different and amazing.  I came up with an idea to paint the ceiling red.  I searched high and low until I came up with a metallic red paint I thought might work.  The client said, “Yes!” emphatically and gave me the go-ahead.

I was really happy we came up with a design plan that satisfied their love for color, their desire for something unusual, and a room that fit their personalities.  I designed several rooms for this client but the living room with the red ceiling ended up as their favorite.

Residential Interior Design: Dining Room Melville, Long Island, NY

When I was called in on this interior design project for a home in Melville, Long Island, the homeowner conveyed to me that that she wanted to reclaim the dining room back from the kids. The look we achieved was elegant and sophisticated.

Before

After

We said our good-byes to the kiddie’s basketball court and got started on the interior design for the new dining room.  The client expressed a desire for a sophisticated NYC Manhattan look.

We decided upon a black color for the walls.  To give the room warmth, we then used highly polished Brazilian Walnut wood for the dining room chairs, table and credenza. Instead of simply hanging one centered fixture over the table we created interest by hanging two square lights. The ceiling was arched so it created a little bit of a mounting challenge.

The style of this dining room needed artwork that would make a statement and offset the dramatic black walls. My instinct told me to use chrome frames with black & white prints.  I have a wonderful resource that I use that does art consulting.  This is an important resource of mine because sometimes we have a vision and you need the right professional to help implement the vision.  I asked my art consultants to find me modern black & white pictures in a sequence of six pictures. Well they certainly delivered!  I am so thankful for having the right resources.  The correct artwork makes this room complete and elevates the whole design project to another level.

The windows in this room were dated and old.  We researched having them replaced but it wasn’t cost-effective.  We needed a solution that fit within our budgetary restraints and solved our design dilemma.  Designing on a budget often presents challenges.  In some cases, we can turn a negative into a positive.  With the help of my window treatment supplier, we came up with a wonderful solution.  We did not want the room to look dark, so we alternated the panels and strategically placed the solid panels to cover the imperfections of the window. The Damask fabric made a great visual statement.  It also added a transitional element to the room.

We then coordinated the décor in the dining room with the adjoining living room.  It was a pleasure to work on the interior design of this lovely home in Melville, Long Island.

Melville, Long Island, NY
Melville is a quiet hamlet in the town of Huntington in Suffolk County on Long Island, New York.  It is believed that the name Melville was derived from the Latin term for honey. The area had an abundance of honeybees and was known as Sweet Hollow prior to 1854. Around the same time the town changed its name to Melville, the American Author Herman Melville was at the height of his fame after publishing Moby Dick in 1851, so it is debatably where the town’s name came from.

The land area of Melville is 11.3 square miles.  The surface is hilly with a high elevation of 160 feet and consists of lush green foliage and patches of luxuriant forest growth that lend the region a picturesque attractiveness.  Melville has grown from a small farming community to an upper middle-class residential neighborhood on Long Island.  Melville has about 4,900 homes with some 81% of the households comprised of married couples and 38% with children under 18 living with them.  Half Hollow Hills Central School District serves the Melville area.

According to the 2009 census, the median income for a family living in Melville was $118,507.  The 2009 census estimated the median house or condo real estate value in Melville was $725,950.

The average high temperature in Melville in July is 81.1 degrees.  The average low temperature in Melville in January is 24.2 degrees.  The annual precipitation in Melville is 43.0 inches.

Residential Interior Design: Living Room Brookville, Long Island, NY

Located in a gorgeous home in Upper Brookville, New York, I found a completely empty living room that had interesting architectural lines. As a designer, I was anxious to give the interior of this room the WOW factor. We started with the carpeting, which the client wanted to keep. It had blue and gray tones, so I used that as my starting point for the interior design of this living room.

Before

The homeowners, Vipul and Anu, a young married couple and in their early 30’s, were open to fresh interior design ideas. They appreciated classic, modern designs, chrome finishes and fabrics with a sheen. I found a wonderful fabric with a large damask pattern. Instead of overwhelming the room I opted to use the Damask for the window panels. I trimmed the tops of the panels with a coordinating trim.

The sofas were custom-made by my craftsmen to the size and specifications of the client’s wants and needs. The feel and design for this living room was one that creates a sense of balance. That is why I chose to center the sofas. I also centered two black console tables on either end of the windows in the room. I then added mirrors sized to fit into the panel molding above these console tables. The mirrors reflected the lighting from the crystal chandelier and add a sense of glamor to the design.

The client wanted artwork that made a real statement. The painting we chose for the focal point on the wall certainly has achieved that look. It adds color and an element of nature to the room that grounds us.

The ottoman was to take center stage. I found a Teflon-treated fabric that was done in a metallic silver tone which we used to upholster the ottoman.
